Having a professional photoshoot with your dog is an exciting experience, but a little preparation before your session can make the difference between good photos and absolutely stunning ones! Your dog doesn’t need to be perfectly trained, you just need to set them up for success.

Here’s how to prepare your dog for a fun and relaxed photoshoot experience…

1. Go for a walk before your photoshoot

Dogs find it easier to focus and stay calm when they’re not full of energy – it’s best to take them for a walk and let them have a run around before your session, not so much that they’re exhausted, but to let the use some energy beforehand.

2. Bring high value treats

Treats are your secret to success – bring something your dog really loves like chicken, sausage or cheese, that is easy to break up into smaller pieces. These help grab attention, reward good behaviour and keep them motivated throughout the session. If your dog is not particularly food motivated, it sometimes helps to give them a smaller breakfast or dinner (depending on the time of your session) so they are more interested in food.

Tip: Avoid large treats – small, quick rewards work best to help your dog understand what we are asking of them.

3. Don’t stress about perfect behaviour

Your dog doesn’t need to be perfectly trained or even be able to sit for a long time. Some of the best photographs are moments caught in between – the cute head tilts, curious expressions and bounciness. As your photographer, I’ll work with your dog’s personality, to capture who they truly are.

4. Collar and lead choice…

Whilst your dog may not be on the lead during photos and if they are, it will be removed during editing – a simple, thin lead is much easier to remove in post production. For their collar, it’s best to avoid bright colours and busy patterns.

5. Grooming makes a big difference

Your dog doesn’t need to have had a professional groom, unless you want one – check out a list of dog groomers in Sussex here. A brush or bath and removal of any dirt around their eyes really helps them look their best in the photographs.

6. Bring your dog’s favourite toy

Toys really help keep dogs motivated throughout the photoshoot and are great for creating happy expressions. I always bring a squeaky toy with me to get those super cute head tilt photos! If your dog has a favourite toy, bring it along – it can also help them feel more comfortable being in a new place.

7. Relax and enjoy the session

Your dog can feel your energy and will notice how your feeling – it has a huge influence on their mood too. Try to relax and have fun, it will help your to do the same and a happy dog always makes the best photographs!

A successful dog photoshoot isn’t about perfection, it’s about capturing your dog’s personality. With a bit of preparation, some treats, and a relaxed mindset, you’ll end up with images that truly reflect who your dog is. And that’s what makes them so special.
