Best Beaches in East Sussex for Dogs
Finding a beach that’s not only dog-friendly but also the right fit for your dog can be a challenge, so I’ve compiled a list of my favourite dog friendly beaches including parking and what to expect.
Top 3 Dog Friendly Beaches in East Sussex
Pevensey Bay (closer to Eastbourne) which also leads to Norman’s Bay and then Cooden Beach (closer to Bexhill-on-Sea) are all dog friendly year round with no restrictions, allowing dogs to be off-lead along the entire beach at any time. All three of these beaches do have pebbles, but open up to large sandy expanses during low tide. Pevensey, Norman’s Bay and Cooden Beach are all relatively quiet compared to beaches such as Eastbourne, Seaford and Brighton so are ideal for dogs, with plenty of space to run around.
Pevensey Bay has the best parking, with a ‘Pay to Park’ car park on Sea Road.
Norman’s Bay has limited lay-by parking along Coast Road.
Cooden Beach also has limited ‘Pay to Park’ lay-by parking along Herbrand Walk.
4. Winchelsea Beach
Winchelsea Beach is a fantastic sandy beach with no restrictions on dogs year round, allowing off-lead walking along the whole beach at any time. Winchelsea Beach is a great alternative to Camber Sands which does have restrictions on where dogs are allowed during the summer (more about that below…), and is usually less busy.
There is a small car park, a short walk from the beach called ‘Pett Level Parking’, charges may apply. There is also limited lay-by parking along Pett Level Road with direct access to the beach.

5. Birling Gap
Birling Gap is a small beach with access via a winding staircase. It is a beautifully scenic beach and very popular amongst tourists. There are no restrictions for dogs year round, dogs are allowed off-lead but it is advised to keep them on a lead until you are on the beach due to the danger of the cliff edge.
There is a large car park which is free to National Trust members or ‘Pay to Park’ for non-members.
6. Camber Sands
Camber sands is a large sandy beach with plenty of space for the huge amount of visitors it receives every year. It is one of the only beaches in East Sussex that is fully sand with sand dunes and no pebbles or rocks. However, there are restrictions on where dogs are allowed from the 1st of May to the 30th of September, but dogs are still allowed in some areas (see map).
There are multiple ‘Pay to Park’ car parks, although the best car parks to enter the dog friendly zones are Camber Car Park and Broomhill Car Park at either end of the beach.
